Arusha is a district in the Tanzanian region of Arusha with the administrative headquarters in Arusha . The district is bordered to the north by the Longido district , to the east by the Meru district , to the south by the Manyara region and to the west by the Monduli district .

geography

The district has a size of 1,447 square kilometers with a population of around 740,000 (as of 2012). The area is a highland of about 1000 meters above sea level with rolling hills from which the 4566 meter high Mount Meru rises. The climate in Arusha is warm and mild, Cwb according to the effective climate classification . There are two rainy seasons. Long rains fall from April to June, and there are short showers from October to December. A total of 800 to 1000 millimeters of precipitation falls annually, the temperature is between 16 and 33 degrees Celsius.

The district was founded in 2007 with the separation of the former Arumeru district.

In 2002 the district had 564,860 inhabitants. Within ten years this number rose to 739,640 inhabitants. During the same period, the literacy rate rose from 76 to 83 percent in the country and from 93 to 97 percent in the city.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 138 primary schools in the district for the education of children, 92 of which are public schools and 46 are privately operated (as of 2018).
  • Health: In addition to the state institutions, such as the Arusha Hospital, there are seven private health centers and nine health centers run by church organizations. 35 traditional healers also offer their help.
  • Water: With 94 water supply systems, 57.6 percent of the population is supplied with safe and clean water (as of 2019).

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture

50,425 hectares, about a third of the total area of ​​the district, are used for agriculture. A total of around 200,000 cattle, 170,000 goats, 90,000 sheep and 430,000 chickens were kept in 2012. The district is best known for its coffee, which is mainly grown by small farmers. Together with the neighboring district of Kilimanjaro, more than half of Tanzanian Arabica coffee is grown. This generates a third of Tanzania's export revenues (as of 2000).

Arusha is the central starting point for many safaris in the national parks in northern Tanzania, be it the Serengeti , the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara , Kilimanjaro or the Olduvai Gorge . The city itself also offers interesting architecture and historical monuments due to its over 100 nationalities. Right outside the city gates, the Arusha National Park is located around Mount Meru, the fifth highest peak in Africa.

Infrastructure

  • Roads: Arusha is on both the T2 national road, which runs from Dar es Salaam to Kenya, and the T5, which connects Arusha with Dodoma .
  • Railways: The Usambara from Tanga to Arusha was discontinued in 2007, but opened again in 2019.
  • Airport: In the district there is the regional airport Kisongo with flights to Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and Lake Manyara. In 2018, 223,000 passengers were handled. Kilimanjaro International Airport is around 50 kilometers from downtown Arusha.

Nature reserves, sights

  • Arusha National Park: Established in 1960, this park is a small park in Tanzania with its 552 square kilometers. Since its altitude ranges from 1500 to 4566 meters above sea level, it offers steppe landscape, jungle and high mountains in a small space.
