Meru is a district in the Tanzanian region of Arusha with the capital Usa River . It is bordered by the Longido district to the north, the Kilimanjaro region to the east, the Manyara region to the south and the Arusha and Arusha City districts to the west .

The district is 1268 square kilometers and has around 270,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The dominant element is Mount Meru on the border with the Arusha district. According to the rainfall, the district can be divided into three zones:

  • High precipitation averaging 1000 millimeters per year: the zone is forested and has many sources that are used in the other zones.
  • Average precipitation of around 500 millimeters per year: The area is partially forested.
  • Low precipitation of 300 millimeters per year: In order to operate agriculture, this zone must be irrigated.

The district was created by splitting the former Arumeru district into the Meru and Arusha districts.

population

Meru is the district with the smallest population growth in the Arusha region. While the population of the region increased by 31.5 percent from 2002 to 2012, the population in Meru increased from 231,999 to 268,144 between 2002 and 2012, that is 15.9 percent. The district is very densely populated and has a high literacy rate, over 90 percent of the population over fifteen can read and write (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

education

There are 143 primary schools and 55 secondary schools in Meru. Of the primary schools, 112 are public schools and 31 are private schools; of the secondary schools, 29 are public and 26 are private. 93.6 percent of 7 to 13-year-olds attend primary school (as of 2019).

health

The district has two hospitals (one state), nine health centers (seven state) and 51 pharmacies (as of 2019). Eleven percent of the population had social security (as of 2012).

water

In 2019, 64 percent of the population was supplied with drinking water.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2012, 61 percent of those over the age of ten were gainfully employed, 11 percent worked in the household, 22 percent were pupils or students, 3 percent were unemployed and 3 percent unable to work. 77 percent of households had a radio, 17 percent a television, 79 percent had a mobile phone and four percent a car.

Agriculture

With 81,400 hectares of arable land, almost two thirds of the district's total area is suitable for agriculture; 68,000 hectares are effectively cultivated. Agriculture is the most important economic factor: 78.7 percent of the working population work here, 64.5 percent in their own farm, 14.2 percent in another. 92.7 percent of households in rural areas keep farm animals, mainly poultry, goats and cattle. The Ngarenanyuki community is a specialty. Here tomatoes are grown on an area of ​​1,200 hectares on a high plateau with year-round rainfall. An average of 120,000 tons are harvested annually (as of 2019).

Fishing only plays a subordinate role; less than one percent of households are engaged in fishing.

beekeeping

In Meru there are around 600 beekeepers with 2200 beehives and an annual honey yield of 6000 kilograms (as of 2019).

  • Arusha National Park : With 552 square kilometers, this smallest national park in Tanzania was established in 1960 and is located on the eastern slope of Mount Meru at an altitude of 1500 to 4566 meters above sea level. It includes steppes, jungles and high mountains; monkeys, buffalos, warthogs and waterbuck live here. It also offers a good view of the nearby Kilimanjaro.
  • Meru Forest Reserve : This forest reserve covers the outer slopes of Mount Meru and contains 400 species of birds, monkeys and leopards. Part of it is also in the neighboring Arusha district.
