The Longyou Grottoes ( Chinese  龙游 石窟 ) on the Fenghuang Hill on the Qujiang River in Longyou , Quzhou Prefecture , Zhejiang Province , are 24 caves carved out of the sandstone , about 2000 years old with a base area of ​​3.8 hectares . Some of the grottos are up to 30 meters high. 7 of the 24 caves are accessible.

history

In June 1992 four farmers pumped out a fish pond to make it easier to catch the fish . After 17 days the water was almost completely drained and they came across the opening of a grotto. More caves were discovered in the following months . Based on ceramic fragments that were found in one of the caves that could age of the caves to about 2,000 years dating are. According to official Chinese research opinion, the grottoes were created for military purposes in the Qin Dynasty under Emperor Qin Shihuangdi .
