Lookeen is a desktop and email search program. It supports the search for files , e-mails, contacts and file attachments etc. on your own computer, Microsoft Exchange server and application and terminal server .

Working method

Since the introduction of Lookeen 10, the shareware has been an independent desktop search tool . After installation and initial indexing , Lookeen allows you to quickly and easily search through personal files on the desktop and in Outlook . The index file is only saved in the local network to protect the data ; even in corporate and virtual desktop infrastructure environments (VDI), the index file is only stored in the corporate network and not in a cloud , for example .

The application is called up by pressing the Strgbutton twice or via the start menu . Local files can be edited and saved directly in the preview without having to start Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel separately.

The previous version, Lookeen 8, had to be integrated directly into Microsoft Outlook as a pure Outlook extension based on the Outlook add-on concept. In Lookeen 10 this extension is optional. Compared to conventional e-mail client search engines, the Lookeen index also contains the entire Outlook folder structure.

history

The design of the first versions was very similar to the Lookout e-mail search software from the Silicon Valley startup Lookout Soft Inc. Lookout was acquired by Microsoft in 2004 for allegedly 6 million US dollars, and then integrated into Windows Desktop Search . Lookout itself continued to be traded as freeware, but from Outlook version 2007 onwards it could no longer be installed or only with considerable modifications. In January 2007, Axonic started developing a successor model for Lookout, which could no longer be used with the release of Microsoft Windows Vista in January 2007. In January 2008, Axonic finally brought Lookeen, a solution for professional data and e-mail searches, onto the market and sold it in over 40 countries within eight months. In March 2010, Lookeen won the “Best Outlook Add-on 2010” award from the US website About.com. Today, according to the manufacturer, Lookeen is sold in over 100 countries. In 2013, the Lookeen 8 version was published together with a new Enterprise Search version. Since the release of Lookeen 10 in the spring of 2015, the Desktop Search no longer just stands Outlook OVERALL available, but can be independent in all Windows - operating system environments as an alternative to Windows Desktop Search is used.

System environment

When searching, the software relies on the free Lucene 3.0 project , the Outlook Redemption type library and the Outlook Object Model .

Supported data sources

Central indexing

Lookeen 10 supports the central indexing of shared resources in the network (e.g. network files and public folders). A single shared index is created and stored centrally. This index can be reached by all clients in the network via a URL in the network . This is intended to save network and server capacities as well as local storage requirements.

Enterprise roll-out support

Group policies have been supported since Lookeen 8 , which allow the software to be distributed to several workstations in the company at the same time. Many options (e.g. the storage location of the index and the settings files, as well as index intervals and license keys) can be controlled centrally by the administrator. This extension facilitates the use of Lookeen on large terminal servers or Citrix environments.

System requirements

The Desktop Search is currently on the operating systems Windows 2000 , XP , Vista , Windows 7 , Windows 8 and Windows 10 support - the latter in both the 32- and the 64-bit version. The current version was brought onto the market before the release of Windows 10 and completely revised. Lookeen can be integrated into Microsoft Office 2013 , 2010 , 2007 , 2003 or 365 . The software is compatible with virtual environments (VDI) such as Citrix , Terminal Server and VMware .

Lookeen Server Enterprise Search

In July 2011 the Lookeen Server was released as an Enterprise Search solution. This supports global indexing functions and allows full control over all clients and the server using Windows group policy management . The security of the data is guaranteed by taking into account the Windows authorization structure and by SSL and internal encryption.
