Lord Burgess

Irving Louis Burgie , better known as Lord Burgess (born July 28, 1924 in Brooklyn , New York City , † November 29, 2019 in Queens , New York City) was an American composer .

life and work

Burgie's mother was from Barbados and his father from the US state of Virginia . In 1956 he married Elizabeth Turner (born May 31, 1930, † June 28, 2003). The couple had two sons, Irving Jr. and Andrew. In 2007 his autobiography Day-O !!! The Autobiography of Irving Burgie .

His best-known work is probably the song "Jamaica Farewell", to which he contributed the verses. It was recorded by Harry Belafonte , Jimmy Buffett , Carly Simon and others. Other songs composed by him and made famous by Belafonte include "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" and " Island in the Sun ".

Burgie composed the musical "Ballad for Bimshire", which premiered on October 15, 1963 at the Mayfair Theater ( Off-Broadway ).

Irving Burgie also wrote the verses of the Barbados National Anthem, adopted in 1966 .
