Lorenz Justin Ritz (born September 5, 1796 in Niederwald VS ; † January 30, 1870 in Sion ) was a Swiss portrait and church painter and the father of Raphael Ritz .

Life

Lorenz Justin Ritz was born as the third youngest of ten children of Josef Ignaz Ritz and Katharina Schwick and was christened Joseph Lorenz Leo. Originally determined by his parents to be a butcher, Ritz was an apprentice to the barrel painter and gilder Joseph Meinrad Birchler in Einsiedeln from 1811 to 1812 .

In 1816 he attended the municipal drawing school in Geneva . From 1816 to 1819 he was a student of the history and portrait painter Xaver Hecht (1757-1835) in Willisau . Ritz studied from September 27, 1819 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich and from 1821 to 1822 at the St. Anna Academy in Vienna . After completing his studies in 1822, Ritz returned to Valais and worked as a drawing teacher at the Jesuit college in Brig .

In 1826 he married Josefa-Klara Kaiser from Stans and had four children. From 1832 to 1851 Ritz was busy painting altarpieces. In 1839 he published a series of vedute with views of the Valais. In 1839 he moved with the family to Sion, where he opened a private drawing school. After the death of his wife in 1842, Ritz married Marguerite de Torrenté in 1846. From 1848 to 1866 he worked as a drawing teacher in Sion, from 1849 to 1853 also in Brig.

Lorenz Justin Ritz was known as a portrait painter, in his life he created around 650 portraits. From 1818 to 1870 he kept a list of the people he portrayed. He also left his memoir notes on my life for my dear children .
