Lothar Kroll

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lothar Kroll (* 9. April 1959 in Oberglogau , Upper Silesia / Poland ) is director of the Institute of Lightweight Structures and An-Institute Cetex Institute gGmbH the Technical University of Chemnitz . As holder of the professorship for lightweight structural engineering and plastics processing at the Technical University of Chemnitz and head of the Fraunhofer Research Center STEX at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU), he works increasingly in the research and further development of textile-reinforced plastics and hybrid structures as well as their manufacturing and processing processes. The focus is on in-line and in-situ technologies for large-scale production , which allow the resource-saving production of lightweight structures with high performance and functional density. In addition to his scientific work, he works nationally and internationally as a networker, initiator and coordinator in research associations.

Life

Kroll studied at the Technical University Opole ( Poland ) and the TU Clausthal in the field of vehicle technology and mechanical engineering . In 1992 he was at the Technical University of Clausthal, Institute of Engineering Mechanics doctorate and then moved to the Technical University of Dresden , Institute for Lightweight and plastics technology . There he was a senior scientist for several years before he completed his habilitation on lightweight construction and material mechanics in 2005 and was appointed to the professorship of lightweight structural construction and plastics processing at the TU Chemnitz in 2006 . See Academic Career .

Since then he has significantly shaped the research and prestige of the professorship and the TU Chemnitz . The Federal Cluster of Excellence MERGE, which is unique in Germany in the field of lightweight construction , was created under his leadership and is funded by the DFG in the project period 2012 to 2017 . The cluster is also internationally competitive in other networks, such as the self-founded MTC eV and MERGEurope. Universities and clusters from five European countries cooperate in the latter. Thanks to the lively project activity and the acquisition of third-party funds, MERGE is also funded by the BMBF as one of eleven German clusters within the framework of the InterSpiN, which was initiated to internationalize top clusters, future projects and comparable networks. Through Kroll's contacts to Polish universities and partners, u. a. of the Technical University of Wroclaw and the Technical University of Opole , MERGE can also promote international knowledge transfer. The Polish-German Bridge Conference was launched in 2016 under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich . Since 2015, the "International MERGE Technologies Conference for Lightweight Structures" (IMTC) has been held as an exchange platform for the Federal Cluster of Excellence at Chemnitz University of Technology . In cooperation with MERGE, Kroll has also created the international master’s course “Merge Technologies for Resource Efficiency” at the TU Chemnitz .

Kroll is (co-) founder of several institutes or affiliated institutes of the TU Chemnitz , which additionally deepen the research focus of structural lightweight construction and implement it in industrial applications in cooperation with companies. These include:

  • Cetex Institut gGmbH, Chemnitz (research and development of technologies and systems for technical textiles and textile semi-finished products for fiber composite materials) - as chairman of the scientific advisory board
  • Center for integrative lightweight construction technologies, Chemnitz (new injection molding technologies for high-performance components with textile reinforcement or with complex functional and electronic components)
  • Fraunhofer Research Center STEX at Fraunhofer IWU in Chemnitz (new types of textile machines, technologies and interfaces for fiber-reinforced semi-finished products, in-line textile processes for near-net-shape structures, technologies for textile and plastic-based manufacturing processes and preform technologies for bionically reinforced lightweight structures)
  • Plastics Center Oberlausitz of the Fraunhofer IWU , Zittau

For networking at the federal level, the Alliance Textile Lightweight Construction (ATL) was set up as a merger of the TU institutes IST (Institute for Lightweight Structures) and IFK (Institute for Conveyor Technology and Plastics) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the three affiliated institutes under the direction of Kroll Cetex, STFI (Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e.V.) and KVB (Institute for Construction and Composite Construction) of the TU Chemnitz founded. The aim is to bundle the experts for future-oriented research and development by linking the potential of textile and plastics technology for technical applications. See memberships in associations and committees .

As a member of scientific editorial boards and editor of several specialist journals, he shapes the scientific discourse and actively shapes the national and international transfer of knowledge in lightweight structural engineering. His latest project is the English-language open access journal “Technologies for Lightweight Structures”, in which scientists can publish articles quickly and with qualified peer reviews . See memberships in scientific editorial boards .
