Lothar Lies

Lothar Lies SJ (born April 4, 1940 in Offenbach am Main ; † May 29, 2008 in Innsbruck ) was a German religious and Catholic theologian .

Life

In the 1960s, Lies joined the Jesuit order . After studying philosophy and theology, he was ordained a priest in 1970 . In 1972 he worked as a student pastor in the Catholic University Community of Würzburg , where he received his doctorate under Johannes Betz . In 1976 he moved to Innsbruck, where he worked as a university assistant at the Institute for Dogmatics of the Theological Faculty . In 1981 he completed his habilitation with Raymund Schwager with a thesis on Origen's doctrine of the Eucharist .

In 1983 he was offered a professorship for Dogmatic and Ecumenical Theology in Innsbruck. His scientific work focused on the Eucharist and ecumenism . He published numerous papers on these two subjects.

In addition to his work as a university professor , he was involved in working groups and advisory boards. So he participated in the so-called Stählin-Jaeger circle . He was also a member of the scientific advisory board of the Pro Oriente Foundation . He was also a member of the theological commission of the Austrian Bishops' Conference . As a speaker he was responsible for the diocese of Würzburg .

On May 24th, 2008 he was awarded the Papal Order Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice . Since Lies' health was already severely impaired, the honor was carried out in a clinic. Lies passed away five days later.
