Lothar Stark (born September 5, 1876 in Klein Strehlitz , Silesia , Germany ; † March 31, 1944 in Stockholm , Sweden ) was a German film producer and distributor .

Live and act

Born in Silesia, he began working as a journalist in Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main . Paul Davidson interested him in film at the beginning of the 20th century. Stark then concentrated on the work of a film distributor until the beginning of the First World War.

In 1915 he founded his own production company, Lothar Stark-Film GmbH, with which he exclusively produced entertainment films. His most ambitious work was created in February 1916 when Hoffmann's stories were filmed . Towards the end of the war, Stark became involved with the German Film Trust Defense League against the dominant position of the rival company UFA . His own production company only began making films on a regular basis in the Weimar Republic .

With the onset of National Socialist rule , the producer got into trouble for "racial reasons". After the anti-Napoleonic drama about the Tyrolean freedom hero Andreas Hofer Der Judas von Tirol , Stark had to temporarily stop his production activities towards the end of 1933. The Nazi authorities had already issued a tax profile on Stark this year . Apparently he fled to Copenhagen that year . In 1935, Lothar Stark-Film in Berlin was able to resume film production with the Karl May adaptation Through the Desert . This work, as well as the two follow-up films from Stark, The Mysterious Mister X and The Violet from Potsdamer Platz , were directed by the director JA Hübler-Kahla . When his half-Jewish identity was revealed, Lothar Stark-Film had to finally stop its production activities.

In January 1938, Stark moved from Copenhagen to London on short notice . However, the hope of setting up a film production there was dashed. He then returned to Copenhagen two months later. When the German Wehrmacht occupied Denmark in 1940 , Stark had to go into hiding. On the night of October 2 to 3, 1943, the Jews in Denmark managed to escape via the Øresund to Sweden. He died there six months later.
