Loucas Tsilas

Loucas Tsilas (born October 18, 1939 in Athens ) is a former Greek diplomat .

Life

Political career

Loucas Tsilas studied law and economics at the University of Athens . He received his Masters in Political Science from Louisiana State University in New Orleans.

From 1963 to 1965 Tsilas practiced as a lawyer in Athens. In 1965 he joined the Foreign Service, where he worked in the department for the Balkans up to and including 1968. This was followed by a position as first class legation secretary in the Romanian Bucharest until 1972 and from 1972 to 1975 that of a consul in New Orleans in the US state of Louisiana.

Tsilas served as Counselor in Washington, DC from 1975 to 1979. In 1979/1980 he was Deputy Director of the department responsible for NATO and European security affairs in the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs . In 1980 he then became Deputy Director of the Foreign Minister's Diplomatic Office. From 1981 to 1986 he had exequatur as consul general in Paris . He was appointed ambassador in Pretoria / Cape Town in South Africa in 1987 and was also accredited as ambassador to Malawi, Swaziland and Lesotho. He held these functions until 1989. From 1990 to 1991 he was also President of the Greek Diplomatic Association. In 1990 he was appointed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens, where he served as Director of NATO, WEU and European Security Affairs. From 1991 to 1993 he was appointed Director of the Diplomatic Office of the Prime Minister of Greece. On June 15, 1993, he was appointed Ambassador to Washington, DC , where he was accredited from September 3, 1993 to September 10, 1998. At the same time he was ambassador of the island state The Commonwealth of The Bahamas .

From July 1998 to August 2000, Tsilas was Permanent Representative of the Greek Government to the European Commission in Brussels . In 1997, Tsilas was also one of the five members of the committee who organized the successful bid for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .

From August 2000 to May 2015, Tsilas was the managing director of the Alexander Onassis Foundation and is also the author of several studies, including an extensive work on the Balkans .

He is currently Professor of International History of Diplomacy at Queens College, City University of New York .

Private

Tsila's wife, Penelope Kartsonas-Tsilas, is a lawyer, a graduate of the Law Faculty of the University of Athens and an author of legal works. The couple have two children, Nicos Tsilas and Vicky Tsilas, who both work as lawyers.
