Louis-Jacques Goussier (born March 7, 1722 in Paris ; † 1799 there ) was a French mathematician, illustrator , graphic artist and encyclopedist .

Live and act

Coming from a humble background, he first studied humanities, mathematics and philosophy at the free school of the mathematician and philosopher Pierre-André Leguay de Prémontval , where he later became a professor of mathematics. The school was closed in 1744.

In 1751 he married Marie-Anne-Françoise Simmonneau; he had two children with her.

As an autodidact, Goussier made illustrations for Charles Marie de La Condamine ( Calcul des méridiens. (1789)).

In 1792 he was employed in the technical department of arts and crafts (division technique des arts et métiers) by the Ministry of the Interior (ministère de l'Intérieur) and in 1794 in the arms and armaments section (section armes et armements) by the welfare committee ( Comité de salut public). In the same year he published a collection of images of machines and art tools on behalf of the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers .

In 1747 he was won over by Jean le Rond d'Alembert for the Encyclopédie . He devoted himself to this task for almost a quarter of a century. To this end, he also undertook several extensive trips within France, for example to Burgundy , Champagne or the Loire, to visit local handicrafts, such as paper mills, iron foundries or musical instrument makers, and to document them graphically.

Encyclopédie : L'Économie rustique: la fabrique du tabac , vol. 1, pl. 49

Denis Diderot initially asked Goussier to revise existing illustrations. Later more than 900 graphics and copperplate engravings were made by him, that is almost a third of the total work of 2885 engravings.
