Louis Édouard Fournier (born December 12, 1857 in Paris , † April 10, 1917 there ) was a French painter and illustrator .

Fournier studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Alexandre Cabanel . For his painting La Colère d'Achille , which depicts the wrath of Achilles described in Homer's Iliad , he won the Prix ​​de Rome in the painting category in 1881 .

Together with other artists such as Alexandre Falguière he participated in numerous larger artistic projects. Including the mosaics at the Grand Palais in Paris, where he created an 80-meter-long mosaic frieze in the colonnades of the main facade on Avenue Winston Churchill in 1900, depicting important milestones in ancient and French art history.

He also made a number of paintings of the sights of Lyon and numerous wooden sculptures. In Lyon, his well-known fresco Glory of Lyon and Beaujolais is in the consultation room of the Departmental Council of Rhône . One of his most famous paintings, L'Enterrement de Shelley , is in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool , showing the cremation of the corpse of the writer Percy Bysshe Shelley by his friends Lord Byron , Edward John Trelawny and Leigh Hunt on July 12, 1822 at La Spezia . From 1902 to 1904 he created the mosaic panels of Jesus in the temple , flagellation and crowning of thorns in three chapels of the Rosary Basilica of Lourdes . Fournier also made a name for himself as a book illustrator.
