From 1883 to 1888 he taught mathematics there. In 1888, LG Carpenter accepted a teaching position in engineering and physics at the Colorado Agricultural College in Fort Collins , Colorado; as the successor to Elwood Mead . From 1888 he developed the first systematic course for hydraulic engineers ( irrigation ), which graduates complete with a “Bachelor of Science in Irrigation Engineering”. In 1889 Carpenter became director of the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station. In 1891 Carpenter was offered to serve as president of the Colorado College of Agriculture; however, he declined this offer. From 1902 to 1906, LG Carpenter was involved in an advisory capacity in the legal dispute in the US states of Kansas and Colorado over water withdrawals from the Arkansas River , which became groundbreaking in water law issues.
