Terumbu Semarang Barat Kecil ( English Louisa Reef ) is a coral reef in the southern part of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea . Terumbu Semarang Barat Kecil literally means Small Western Semarang Reef . Accordingly, there is also a Great Western Semarang Reef , Terumbu Semarang Barat Besar ( English Royal Charlotte Reef ) further to the southwest.

geography

The reef is located 205 kilometers off the northeast coast of the state of Sabah at the headland Tanjung Baram and over 210 kilometers off the northwest coast of Brunei near Kuala Belait . It is around 1,800 meters long from east to west and 1,000 meters wide, and protrudes about a meter from the water at high tide.

The island in the Spratly conflict

The Louisa Reef is also claimed by several nations within the Spratly Islands conflict . It falls into the Exclusive Economic Zone of Brunei.

Malaysia refers to the continental shelf argument (Shelf of Sabah and Sarawak) or the 200-mile zone in its legal claims. It claims a total of 12 southern Spratly Islands and currently has six islands or reefs occupied ( Ardasier Reef , Dallas Reef , Erica Reef , Investigator Shoal, Mariveles Reef and Swallow Reef ). The legal claims are well secured by the Convention on the Law of the Sea . Malaysia has a modernly equipped navy (10 missile frigates ).

In 1988, China set up a stone marker on the island, which was immediately removed from Malaysia. Malaysia operates a beacon on the island .

Malaysia apparently gave up its claim in favor of Brunei around 2013.
