The Louisiana Star is a passenger ship that was modeled after an American stern wheel steamer . It is the flagship of Rainer Abicht Elbreederei and is used for Hamburg harbor tours .
The ship was built by Deutsche Binnenwerften GmbH in Tangermünde and christened on May 6, 1999 by Linda Lynch, wife of the Consul General of the United States of America .
The Louisiana Star is approved for 500 people and the passenger facilities are spread over three decks : the main deck with stage, dance floor and a hub buffet, the upper saloon with buffet and bar and the open deck.
The ship is powered by two Caterpillar marine diesel engines , each with 384 kW acting on two Schottel rudder propellers of the type SRP 200. The paddle wheel at the rear is only used for optics.
The Louisiana Star is one of two "paddle steamers" in Hamburg , along with the Mississippi Queen, which is roughly the same size .
