Shalom Luani (born August 5, 1994 ) is a former American-Samoan soccer player and active American football player in the position of safety for the Houston Texans in the National Football League (NFL).

Soccer

He is (alongside Ramin Ott ) one of two players who have scored two goals for the American-Samoan national football team in World Cup qualifiers. Both goals were scored in the 2014 World Cup qualification , which also served as qualification for the OFC Nations Cup 2012 - to 2-0 against Tonga (final score 2: 1) and 1-0 against the Cook Islands (final score 1: 1 ). The first of the two games marked American Samoa's first win in a FIFA-recognized game.

He scored another goal for the American-Samoan U-23 to lead 1-0 against the Solomon Islands in qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games . American Samoa lost the game 1:16. He made a total of seven full international matches (2 goals) for his home country.

American football

In late 2014, Luani joined Washington State University , where he played college football for the Washington Cougars . In his two years in college, he made 157 tackles and 8 interceptions . In the 2017 NFL Draft , he was selected as safety in the 7th round by the Oakland Raiders . In his 2017 rookie season , Luani scored 18 tackles for his team. In the offseason, Luani was traded by the Raiders for a seven-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks . In the 2018 season , Luani achieved nine tackles in twelve games. In April 2019 he was given a new one-year contract. He was released on August 30, 2019. On October 9, 2019, the Los Angeles Chargers signed Luani for their Practice Squad . On October 30, 2019, he was promoted to the active squad. He was released at the end of November 2019. On December 4, 2019, the Houston Texans signed Luani to their Practice Squad.
