Lucifer is a doom metal - and rock - band , which in 2014 from Berlin and London was founded. The band is now based in Stockholm .

history

The band was formed in June 2014 with guitarist Gaz Jennings formerly at Cathedral . The singer Johanna Sadonis and the drummer Andrew Prestridge were previously active with The Oath . In early 2015 the single Anubis was released , which was followed a little later by the second called Izrael . The band held their first appearance in Berlin in April 2015. In September she played at The Borderline in London. At the end of July, the band began a US tour together with High on Fire , Pallbearer and Venomous Maximus . In the same year the debut album Lucifer I was released , which was recorded with producer Ingo Krauss in the Berlin Candy Bomber Studio . The album was also released in a limited edition of 100 copies, with a single included, which contains cover versions of the Angel Witch song Loser and The Rattles song Devil's on the Loose .

After the release, Jennings and Prestridge left the band. Shortly before, the relationship between Sadonis and Rise Above owner and Cathedral singer Lee Dorrian broke up . She suspected Jennings didn't want to play in a band with his boss's ex. Andrew Prestridge couldn't make a living from Lucifer's earnings. Johanna Sadonis' new partner Nicke Andersson (including The Hellacopters ), guitarists Martin Nordin from the band Dead Lord as well as Robin Tidebrink and bassist Alex Mayr joined the band . In April 2018 the band was signed by the German record label Century Media . On July 6, 2018, the second studio album Lucifer II was released , which entered the German album charts at number 40 and 68 in the Swiss. Lucifer played at Hellfest and the Freak Valley Festival .

On March 20, 2020, the band released the album Lucifer III , which reached number 17 in the German and number ten in the Swedish album charts.

style

According to Matthias Mader from Rock Hard , the band wants to distance itself from the term “ Occult Rock” and instead describes their music as “Heavy Magic Rock”. In an interview with Mader, Sadonis stated that the band is oriented towards rock of the 1970s and doom metal. In the same issue, Boris Kaiser also reviewed the debut album. In contrast to The Oath, Lucifer seems less focused on the singer and more like a unit. Gaz Jennings' guitar playing has a doomy sound. The album offers a mixture of proto metal , doom metal and retro rock. Inhonorus from stormbringer.at wrote in his review of the Anubis album that there are currently “retro-occult bands like a dime a dozen. A lot of bands flock to the music market from Sweden in particular, but in contrast to the many bands that often sound the same, Lucifer have something particularly captivating and magical in their songs. Even the first sounds of the retro occult rockers are reminiscent of a modern variant of coven , or of bands like Blood Ceremony , Witch Charmer , Jex Thoth or Jess and the Ancient Ones . "
