On March 7, 1849 he was appointed general by the Minister of War Lázár Mészáros and was given the command of the 2nd Army Corps. The victories of the Hungarians in March and April over Windisch-Graetz were partly thanks to Aulich. While Arthur Görgey then hurried to relieve the Komorn Fortress , Aulich moved into Pest , which had been cleared by the imperial family, on March 24, welcomed with jubilation and celebrated as the hero of the day.

Since the beginning of May he took part in the siege and storming of Oven . In July he was sent to Komorn with László Csányi and Ernő Kiss to get Görgey to obey the Hungarian government, which mission was unsuccessful. After Görgey's resignation, Aulich became minister of war, but immediately recognized his dictatorship and declared himself in favor of extending arms. Extradited by the Russians, he and twelve other generals were hanged in Arad on October 6, 1849 .
