Ludwig Friederichsen (born May 1, 1841 in Rendsburg , † April 20, 1915 in Hamburg ) was a German geographer and cartographer as well as a publisher and colonial politician.

Life

Ludwig Friederichsen received his training in Gotha under Emil von Sydow and August Petermann , later studied at the universities in Kiel and Berlin and in 1868 set up a map shop in Hamburg.

In 1873 he founded the Geographical Society in Hamburg , whose first secretary he was from that time. Friederichsen edited their communications , published the Journal of the Godeffroy Museum between 1873 and 1879 and published several maps of Central and West Africa and the South Seas . In 1886 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

His son Max Friederichsen was a university geographer.

Honors

The Friederichsen Glacier in Antarctica has been named in his honor since 1971 .
