Ludwig Georg Courvoisier (also Louis Courvoisier or Louis Georges Courvoisier ) (born November 10, 1843 in Basel , † April 8, 1918 there ) was a Swiss surgeon and a leader in research into the biliary tract and its disease.

Life

Ludwig Georg Courvoisier was born the son of the merchant Georg Courvoisier (1817-1891) and his wife Mary, née Lowndes, daughter of a pastor from Wales. He had eight siblings. Courvoisier studied medicine at the Universities of Basel and Göttingen and passed his state exams in Basel in 1868. In the same year he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the microscopic structure of the spinal ganglia . Courvoisier became an assistant doctor to the surgeon August Socin . Study trips took Courvoisier to London and Vienna.

From 1871 to 1918 he was medical director of the Diakonissenspital Riehen. In 1890 his fundamental study Casuistic-statistical contributions to the pathology and surgery of the biliary tract appeared , in which he described the Courvoisier's sign named after him (p. 57 f.). In 1880 Courvoisier received his habilitation and in 1888 he was appointed associate professor and in 1900 personal professor for surgery at the University of Basel. In 1912 he resigned from his professorship.

Courvoisier's enthusiasm for the flora and fauna found expression in a large herbarium and an important butterfly collection as well as in numerous publications on his botanical and entomological studies. He was also involved as a politician in the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt from 1887 to 1890 . From 1890 until his death he was a member of the education council.

Ludwig Georg Courvoisier married Leopoldine Ida Maximiliane Sachs (* May 21, 1849 - August 31, 1905), daughter of the Baden court master Sachs and niece of the painter Moritz von Schwind . The couple had several children including:

  • Leo (1873–1955), astronomer
  • Walter (1875–1931), composer ∞ Hedwig Thuille (1890–1964) (daughter of Ludwig Thuille )
