Ludwig Hohenegger (born February 21, 1807 in Memmingen ; † August 25, 1864 in Teschen ) was a German geologist and mining specialist .

Life

After studying law in Munich and then studying mining and metallurgy at the Bergakademie Freiberg , he gained practical experience in the Salmschen Eisenwerke in Blansko . In 1833 he entered service in Welten an der Ruhr. In 1835 he took over the management of the Eduard Schmidt puddling and rolling mills in Nachrodt in Westphalia. In 1837 he was appointed director of the ironworks in Wolfsberg and in 1839 was entrusted with the management of the Archduke Albrechtian trades in Ustron in the Teschen area. In his 25 years of activity he has made great contributions to this area by introducing new processes, modernizing the factories, building new plants (including the foundries in Gorka and Trzynietz ), especially the Karlshütte in Lipina . In his own small company school, he taught young miners in mineralogy, geognosy and mining science .

He wrote geological publications on the Carpathian Mountains , such as the 1861 geognostic map of the northern Carpathians in Silesia and the adjacent parts of Moravia and Galicia and the geognostic map of the former area of ​​Krakow . The name Teschenit also goes back to him , applied to a group of basic intrusive rocks from the northern edge of the Carpathian Mountains, which entered the specialist literature via Gustav Tschermak , who modified the term. He was the main initiator of the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn . After his death, his rich fossil collection was transferred to the Bavarian State Collection in Munich, where it was worked on by Karl Alfred von Zittel and his students.

  • Shortly before his death, Ludwig Hohenegger received the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order in recognition of his services to the promotion of the coal and steel industry in Austria .
