Ludwig Kirsner

Ludwig Kirsner (born November 11, 1810 in Donaueschingen ; † September 6, 1876 ​​there ) was a German pharmacist and member of the Reichstag .

Ludwig Kirsner attended grammar school in Donaueschingen before doing natural science studies in Freiburg and Halle . Trained in this way, he was able to take over the farm pharmacy from his father Josef Kirsner, which he ran throughout his life.

On November 20, 1832, Kirsner married Amalia Elsässer (* December 31, 1810) in Donaueschingen, whose sister Josephine (* April 20, 1823) was to marry the sculptor Franz Xaver Reich in 1843 .

Kirsner was elected board member of a liberal-conservative association in 1848 and elected to the Second Baden Chamber in 1849 . From 1852 to 1854 he was mayor of his hometown Donaueschingen. In 1860 he was one of the champions against the Concordat concluded by the Ministry of Franz von Stengel with the Vatican . From 1871 Ludwig Kirsner was President of the Second Chamber.

From 1868 to 1871 he was a member of the Customs Parliament and from 1871 to 1874 of the German Reichstag for the National Liberal Party and constituency 2. Baden, Donaueschingen- Villingen - Bonndorf - Engen - Triberg .

During his third term as President of the Second Chamber of the Baden State Parliament, he resigned on April 10, 1876 due to illness. The following day August Lamey was elected to succeed him. He died on September 6, 1876.

On October 5, 1879, a monument was unveiled in his honor in Donaueschingen: a pyramid with a bronze bust of the politician, the model of which his brother-in-law Franz Xaver Reich had created, was enthroned on the pedestal . The pedestal was provided with words written by Joseph Viktor von Scheffel :

"Free-minded and just, statesmanlike, moderate and reconciling, selfless fulfillment of duty, role model - a blessed quarter of a century of constitutional life in Baden is linked to his work."

In Donaueschingen there is still a street named after Ludwig Kirsner.
