Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld (born January 26, 1903 in Munich ; † May 5, 1989 in Erlangen ) was a German legal scholar .

life and work

Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld came from a respected Bavarian family of artists and scholars. His father was Hans Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1862–1933), who later became director general of the Bavarian State Library . His grandfather Karl Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1830–1895) was the general director of the Bavarian State Railways , his great-grandfather Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794–1872) painter in Dresden.

Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld studied at the University of Munich initially Classics and Ancient History , then jurisprudence. It was in 1929 when William Kish with a dissertation on the doctrine of the comparison to the Dr. iur. PhD . He then turned to legal history. In 1932 he completed his habilitation with Leopold Wenger with a paper on the history of the legal person . Schnorr von Carolsfeld saw himself as Wenger's pupil and represented a view of legal history based on him.

During the Nazi era , Schnorr von Carolsfeld kept his distance from the regime. He also made no outward concessions to the rulers. The NSDAP he never joined. Nevertheless, in 1935 he was appointed associate professor for civil law at the University of Königsberg .

He found his actual academic home in Königsberg. As a result of the teaching tasks, his scientific work also shifted more into the applicable law, which he represented in its entirety. In 1940 he was appointed full professor. Towards the end of the Second World War , his house with the extensive private library and a lot of preliminary scientific work was destroyed. Schnorr von Carolsfeld was for a short time a prisoner of war and after his release went to Münster , where he held courses on civil and Roman law.

In 1946 Schnorr von Carolsfeld received a chair for civil law at the University of Erlangen , which he followed in 1947. In Erlangen he was involved in the university association and was dean of the law faculty several times. In 1971 he retired . He also worked as an honorary professor at the Nuremberg University of Economics and Social Sciences .
