Ludwig Schwerin

Ludwig Schwerin (born July 10, 1897 in Buchen (Odenwald) ; † July 2, 1983 in Ramat Gan , Israel ) was a German-Israeli painter, graphic artist and book illustrator.

Life

He studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy and then worked in Munich and Berlin . In 1938 he fled Germany via Switzerland to Palestine .

Schwerin primarily painted portraits (e.g. Stefan Zweig ) and landscapes . He also illustrated many books, often with landscape sketches, and was considered one of the most important Israeli painters in the second half of the 20th century.

Ludwig-Schwerin-Strasse is named after him in his native Buchen.
