Ludwig Thoma (born April 19, 1891 ; † March 15, 1969 ) was a German local politician and the first democratically elected mayor of Landsberg am Lech after the Second World War .

Life

Thoma was initially district administrator in Schongau from 1937 to 1945, and from 1948 Lord Mayor of the city of Landsberg am Lech . He was the first democratically elected mayor after World War II. His term of office included reconstruction work after the end of the Second World War , dealing with the displaced person and the displaced persons in Landsberg, as well as coming to terms with the city's Nazi past, and the construction of a large number of apartments for the numerous war-related refugees. He tackled the most urgent problems of the post-war period with great energy. Since the number of inhabitants in the city of Landsberg had doubled after the war - in addition to the 1,500 displaced persons and refugees, the city had received and cared for an average of 5,000 Jewish displaced persons from the Kaufering concentration camp complex around Landsberg and Kaufering . He tried unbureaucratically to eliminate the most urgent needs: food supply, clothing, and housing evacuated citizens.

He played a major role in the creation and organization of self-help in the first social housing buildings in post-war history. He made urban land available for the refugee building cooperative.

A large youth stadium and an ice rink stadium were also built during his tenure. In 1958 he resigned from office for health reasons.

Ludwig Thoma found his final resting place, an honorary grave of the city of Landsberg, in the Stadtfriedhof (old cemetery) in Landsberg.

The Oberbürgermeister-Thoma-Strasse in Landsberg was later named after him
