Ludwig von Langenmantel
Ludwig von Langenmantel also Ludwig Langenmantel von Westheim (born April 4, 1854 in Kelheim , † October 6, 1922 in Munich ) was a German nobleman and painter .
Live and act
Ludwig von Langenmantel came from the old Augsburg patrician family of the same name . His father Otto von Langenmantel (1816–1875) was born in Weiler near Kempten , attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and worked as a Bavarian construction clerk. In this capacity he led a. a. 1850 to 1856 the construction of the Liberation Hall near Kelheim. The mother Magdalena von Langenmantel (1825–1900) was a daughter of the battle painter Albrecht Adam (1786–1862). The mother's brothers, Benno Adam (1812–1892), Franz Adam (1815–1886) and Eugen Adam (1817–1880) were also painters.
As a child, Ludwig von Langenmantel began making his first attempts at painting in his grandfather's studio. From 1869 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and in 1874 became a student of Carl Theodor von Piloty . In 1875 he gave painting lessons to a princess of Anhalt-Dessau.
Langenmantel became known as a history and genre painter . In 1876 he created the work Arrest of the chemist Lavoisier , in 1879 the sermon of Savonarola . In 1885, the artist painted several surf pictures for King Ludwig II in Herrenchiemsee Palace , including the battle of Neerimmern and the court assembly in Versailles . From 1886 to 1919 Ludwig von Langenmantel worked as a teacher at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich . During this time he also made ceiling paintings in the Grand Ducal Palace of Luxembourg , about which a separate font was published in 1896.
His daughter Erna von Langenmantel-Reitzenstein (1890–1968) worked as a sculptor and silhouette cutter in Munich. She also created a portrait bust of her father.
The Palatinate painter Heinrich Strieffler was one of Langenmantel's students.
