Ludwig of Mecklenburg

Ludwig, Duke of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] (born August 6, 1725 in Grabow ; † September 12, 1778 in Schwerin ) had been Hereditary Prince of Mecklenburg-Schwerin since 1756 .

Life

Ludwig was the second son of Duke Christian Ludwig II (1683–1756) and his wife, Princess Gustave Karoline zu Mecklenburg (1694–1748), the youngest daughter of Duke Adolf Friedrich II. And his first wife, Princess Marie of Mecklenburg [ -Güstrow].

After the death of his father, his eldest brother Friedrich took over the government in the (partial) duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin on May 30, 1756 . Since his marriage remained childless, Ludwig was made hereditary prince, and later his son took over the regency in Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Together with his wife, Hereditary Prince Ludwig was considered a patron and promoter of the fine arts. Eobald Toze dedicated his monograph to him in 1771: History of the United Netherlands from the Elders to the Present.

On May 13, 1755, the Hereditary Prince Ludwig married Princess Charlotte Sophie von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld (1731–1810), eldest daughter of six children of Duke Franz Josias and his wife Princess Anna Sophia von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. The marriage had two children:

Hereditary Prince Ludwig died on September 12, 1778 in Schwerin and was buried in the Nikolaikirche in Schwerin.
