Luis Brunetto ( Luis Ángel Brunetto ; born October 27, 1901 in Rosario , † May 7, 1968 in Temperley ) was an Argentine athlete who won the Olympic silver medal in the triple jump in 1924 .

Life

In April 1924 Brunetto won the South American Championships in Buenos Aires with 14.64 m in the triple jump. In the long jump he was defeated by the Chilean Ramiro García by millimeters and received the silver medal. At the Olympic Games in 1924 Brunetto jumped 15.425 m as the best jumper in the triple jump qualification. In the final, the Australian Nick Winter surpassed him by ten centimeters. Brunetto received the silver medal, making it the first Argentine to win an Olympic medal in athletics. While Brunetto won his medal, the Argentine polo team won the gold medal. Argentina won its first two Olympic medals on the same day.

Brunetto was never able to surpass his best distance from the Olympic Games in 1924, but he remained the best South American triple jumper for years. In 1926 , 1927 , 1929 and 1931 he won the South American Championships, in 1926 he set the championship record with 15.10 m. Together with the high jumper Valerio Vallanía , his compatriot, Brunetto was the first athlete to win his competition at the South American Championships five times in a row. In 1924, 1926, 1929 and 1931 the two were also part of the winning team in the team classification, only in 1927 the Argentine team had to admit defeat to the Chileans.

With a height of 1.86 m in competition, Brunetto, who weighs 74 kg, is the only Argentine triple jumper to date (as of 2016) to win an Olympic medal.
