Luis Juez (born September 13, 1963 in Córdoba ) is an Argentine lawyer and politician . He was mayor of the city of Cordoba between 2003 and 2007 and has been a senator in the Argentine Congress since 2009 .

Life and political career

Until 2003

Juez's career began at the age of 17 in the Partido Justicialista . In 1987 he was president of the "Juventud Peronista", the youth organization of this party. His popularity in the province of Cordoba stems from his post as anti-corruption prosecutor in the provincial government between 1998 and 2002. He hit the headlines in 2002 when he discovered a case of corruption in the family of the province's governor, José Manuel de la Sota . He was then dismissed from the post.

Juez began from this year, under the name Partido Nuevo contra la Corrupción, por la Honestidad y la Transparencia (German: New Party against Corruption, for Honesty and Transparency ) to build an opposition platform against the provincial government that is not in the links or right, but should gather different opinions from many sectors of Cordoba's society.

2003–2007: Mayor of Cordoba

On October 3, 2003, Juez won the mayoral election of Cordoba with this platform, clearly against the candidate of the Partido Justicialista, Alfredo Keegan .

His reign was marked by an attempt to remedy the deficits in the infrastructure during the Argentina crisis . In particular, local public transport and the road network were badly damaged by this crisis. Another element is the opposition policy to the provincial government of De la Sota, which led to a solid dispute between the two politicians. This dispute persisted until the end of his term in office, despite temporary gestures of reconciliation.

In 2007 Juez lost the election as governor of Cordoba just 1.1 percent behind Juan Schiaretti (PJ). A review of the election results, which was then requested by Juez, refused the judiciary of Cordoba.

After 2007: Senator and renewed candidacy for governor

Juez's successor as mayor of Córdoba was the candidate of his own Partido Nuevo party , Daniel Giacomino , who had been deputy mayor under Juez between 2003 and 2005. However, the relationship between the two politicians deteriorated increasingly after he took office and the party split into two rival wings, with Giacomino and his supporters on the side of the Frente para la Victoria of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner , Juez, however, remained on the opposition course and himself later allied with the socialist Hermes Binner .

In the parliamentary elections in Argentina in 2009 , Juez ran as a candidate for the Argentine Senate. Since his election platform Frente Cívico , an alliance of the Partido Nuevo with the Partido Socialista and the ARI , won the most votes among the candidates for the Senate in Córdoba, he moved into the Senate for the term of office until 2013.

In 2011, Juez failed again as a candidate in the gubernatorial election, this time against José Manuel de la Sota , who won the election with a 12% lead. He did not run for the office of mayor again this year, but his twin brother Daniel Juez was an unsuccessful candidate for the vice-candidate of his electoral alliance Frente Cívico , Esteban Dómina .
