The Luitpoldstraße is a city road in White Castle in Bavaria , a district town in Central Franconia district Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . It forms the largest space of under ensemble protection standing Old Town White Petersburg . The earlier name Holzmarkt stems from the fact that the firewood and construction wood for handicrafts used to be stored here. Today it is named after the royal Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria .
History and location
Weißenburg, first mentioned in a document in 867, was built around a Carolingian royal court and received the status of a free imperial city in the early 14th century , which it was able to maintain until 1802. In the heyday of the old town, the wooden market was laid out according to plan at a right angle to the market square across the early Bräugasse-Heigertgasse border. The street forms an elongated rectangle and is remarkable for its spaciousness, which is unusual for Franconian city facilities. The extension of this rectangle leads to the former Obertor and the road to Eichstätt . Luitpoldstrasse is bordered to the east by the Old Town Hall , the front side of which faces the square; To the east of it, Rosenstrasse and Am Hof square begin . The nearby Andreasturm is oriented towards Luitpoldstrasse. The Carmelite Church was placed in the long side of the northern wall of the square . In 1903 the Kaiser-Ludwig-Brunnen was built on the southwest side of the square ; for this purpose, Holzmarktbrunnen was abandoned.
