The market square is an inner-city street in Weißenburg in Bavaria , a large district town in the Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen district in Central Franconia . The former market and today's shopping street forms the center of the northern old town and is the second largest square in the old town of Weißenburg, which is under ensemble protection , after Luitpoldstraße .

History and location

Weißenburg, first mentioned in a document in 867, was built around a Carolingian royal court and received the status of a free imperial city in the early 14th century , which it was able to maintain until 1802. The market spreads out as a rectangle on the street axis that leads south to the Spitaltor and on to Augsburg . In the city's heyday, the much larger Holzmarkt (today's Luitpoldstrasse) was planned at right angles to this . A third main street ( Ellinger Straße ) runs from the north, from Nuremberg , through the Ellinger Tor into the city, but only reaches the market after a sharp bend to the east ( Rosenstraße ).
