Schweppermannsbrunnen
The Schweppermannsbrunnen is a well system in Weißenburg in Bavaria , a large district town in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . It is located on the market square within the listed old town not far from the old town hall of Weißenburg. The market fountain is registered under the monument number D-5-77-177-272 as an architectural monument in the Bavarian monument list.
The fountain was built in 1548 or 1549 and was renewed in 1685/1686 by Hans Georg Schwickard from Oettingen . The fountain is made of sandstone and has an octagonal shape. The central pillar of the fountain contains four water pipes that spring from the mouths of flat grimacing masks . The projecting cornice carries an approximately 4 meter high column and a figure of a knight, which were renewed in 1966. The original knight figure with lance and shield are in the Reichsstadtmuseum Weißenburg and are interpreted as a kind of Roland statue .
Before the fountain was known as Schweppermannsbrunnen in the 19th century, it was initially called Schöne Brunnen . The current name comes from an old legend, which is about a White burger in the battle of mühldorf the Seyfried Schweppermann helped Frederick the Handsome to defeat.
