The Luther Church is the Evangelical Lutheran church in the Möhra district of the Moorgrund community in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . It is named after the reformer Martin Luther , whose family has its origins in Möhra.

Luther's ancestors can be traced back to Möhra in the 14th century. Luther's parents Hans Luther and his wife Margarethe, b. There is evidence that Lindemann lived in Möhra until the summer of 1483, before they moved to the Mansfeld region . Luther himself gave a sermon in Möhra on May 3, 1521. History of the church

In the 15th century Möhra had its first small chapel, which was gradually expanded and expanded from 1560 onwards. From 1699 to 1704 a new nave with a post-Gothic choir and a nave in the Baroque style with a wooden barrel vault was built. In 1724 the gallery parapets and in 1794 the wooden barrel ceiling were provided with illusionistic painting.

On the occasion of the anniversary celebrations for Martin Luther's 400th birthday, a Luther library was set up in the church in 1883 and a new bell was procured. During an interior renovation in 1907, the wooden ceiling along with the historical painting was plastered and repainted. In 1945 the west side of the church was damaged by tank bombardment at the end of the Second World War , and the historic organ also suffered severe damage.

When the interior was renovated again in 1968, the plaster was removed from the wooden ceiling and the historic interior painting was restored according to old templates. On the occasion of Martin Luther's 500th birthday, further renovations were carried out on the building; a new organ was also installed.

Sanctuary

From the old chapel, a stone tabletop with five carved consecration crosses has been preserved, which today serves as an altar table. The churchyard gate with a Saxon coat of arms dates from 1615.

In the chancel there are three stained glass windows that were donated in 1907 by a relative of Martin Luther's. One shows Jesus preaching, one the apostles Peter and John, the third Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon .

Peal

In 1883, three bronze bells were procured from state and church funds. For the world wars, these had to be removed as metal donations and handed over to be melted down. Only the largest of the bells survived the forced deliveries of the two world wars. The two lost bells could be replaced in 1968 with donations.

In 1686 the parish bought a used organ from the Trinity Church in Ruhla . This was largely unusable when the church was damaged in World War II. In 1983 the company Rudolf Böhm Orgelbau from Gotha built a new organ into the old case. This has 15 stops on two manuals and pedal .

Trivia

In 2004, the church was the setting for the ARD television film Sehnsucht nach Liebe with Barbara Rudnik in the lead role. Scenes from the television series Dr. Kleist originated in the Luther Church.
