Lutz Reinstrom (born March 29, 1948 in Saßnitz ) was known in Hamburg in 1992 as the "acid barrel murderer". He has been in custody without interruption since September 17, 1991 and on May 22, 1996 was sentenced by the Hamburg Regional Court to life imprisonment with subsequent preventive detention for the murder of two women, attempted serious robbery in unity with deprivation of liberty and for extortionate kidnapping. He is serving this sentence in a Hamburg correctional facility with the highest security level.

The actions

The sadomasochistic assessed furrier had in 1983 on the grounds of his row house on Dompfaffenweg in Hamburg-Rahlstedt built an underground "nuclear bunker". On March 12, 1986, after having stolen money and jewelry with a total value of around 40,000 D-Marks from her, he kidnapped 61-year-old Hildegard K., the wife of his teacher, the master furrier Kurt K. He tied and tortured her the woman before he killed and dismembered her after a week.

On October 5, 1988, Reinstrom locked Annegret B. (31) in the dungeon. He cleared her accounts, tortured and sexually abused her, and recorded her torture on tapes and photos until he also killed and dismembered her after about four weeks.

Outside the cellar, Reinstrom led the life of an innocent and affable family man. Annegret B's mother described Reinstrom to the police as an acquaintance of her daughter and a possible whistleblower, whereupon he was questioned. However, Reinstrom knew how to convince the police officer, whom he knew personally from the swimming club, that he knew nothing, so that further investigations were not carried out. Presumably Annegret B. was still alive at this point. Reinstrom had forced his victims to write farewell letters and postcards to the relatives, which were gradually being sent from abroad: they wanted to start a new life abroad and no more contact. It was subsequently discovered that the victims had hidden calls for help in some of the cards.

On September 6, 1991, Reinstrom kidnapped Christa S. (53), Kurt K's new partner, in her own car and dragged her to his bunker using an electric baton. He handcuffed her and showed her perverted torture photos that he had made of Annegret B. Reinstrom demanded a ransom of 300,000 Deutschmarks. Since the handover was delayed and his wife came off vacation prematurely, he gave up his plan, brought Christa S. to Hamburg-Langenhorn on September 13, 1991 and released her in front of the local police station.

detection

Reinstrom was arrested on September 17, 1991 and sentenced to three years imprisonment on May 26, 1992 for extortionate kidnapping . In the main hearing, the detective Atzeroth-Freier testified as a witness. She had moved in on the night of September 13-14, 1991 to bring Christa S. home after she had been questioned by the police. During a break in negotiations, the officer was approached by Annegret B's mother. This reported the disappearance of her daughter, who was also an acquaintance of Reinstrom. Atzeroth-Freier then requested the proceedings of Hildegard K. and Annegret B., interviewed relatives of the missing persons, made lists of the items that were lost with them and thus investigated - partly in their free time, that the homicide squad to which she belonged does not deal with missing persons felt responsible - the striking parallels between the three cases. Finally, against stubborn resistance, she managed to set up a special commission for further investigations.

During the search of Reinstrom's weekend property in Basedow (Duchy of Lauenburg) and the one in Rahlstedt, the body tracking dogs struck without being able to find any body parts. On November 21, 1992, five cans of hydrochloric acid were found on Dompfaffenweg. Neighbors in Basedow reported that Reinstrom dug a deep pit some time after Annegret B. disappeared. When the police approached with heavy equipment on December 1, 1992, they were able to recover a barrel with human remains in hydrochloric acid. Confronted with this, Reinstrom informed the police that they had buried Hildegard K.'s body in an acid barrel on Dompfaffenweg, which was seized on December 4, 1992.

Proceedings before the jury

The main hearing before the jury under the chairman Gerhard Schaberg began on January 10, 1995. The defendant Reinstrom denied any guilt for the death of the two women and, on the recommendation of his three defense lawyers Leonore Gottschalk-Solger , Klaus Martini and Uwe Maeffert, made extensive use of his right to remain silent . He spoke of the fact that an “organ mafia” killed the women to obtain transplant material or that Hildegard K. had unfortunately broken her neck when falling on the stairs. Most recently, he claimed that Annegret B. died in the sauna when she bit his penis violently after consensual intercourse, so that he pushed her away no less violently and left her in the sauna to be around to take care of bleeding limb. This prompted the jury to commission the medical examiner Klaus Püschel to examine the accused for such bite injuries.

After 93 days of negotiations in 15 months, the jury pronounced a judgment on May 22, 1996 with the most severe sanctions provided for in German criminal law: life imprisonment if the guilt was particularly serious and preventive detention . In contrast to the Annegret B. case, the court in the Hildegard K. case did not see itself in the position of a killing for sexual reasons, i. H. out of lust for murder or to satisfy the sexual instinct ( Section 211 StGB), but was convinced that the killing was in any case out of greed and to cover up a criminal offense.
