Klaus Püschel (born March 18, 1952 in Grammendorf ) is a German professor of forensic medicine and head of the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.

Professional career

Klaus Püschel studied medicine at the Hannover Medical School from 1970 to 1976 , received his doctorate in 1977 and has worked at the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) since 1978 . In 1983 he completed his habilitation and in 1985 he was appointed professor of forensic medicine.

From 1989 to 1991 he held the chair for forensic medicine at the University of Essen .

Since 1991 Püschel has been director of the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. He was also deputy director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Addiction Research (ZIS) at the University of Hamburg.

In 2013 he was elected to the Leopoldina .

Research priorities

According to the Leopoldina, Püschel's research focuses on forensics , forensic imaging, autopsy , victims of violence, drug deaths and the investigation of archaeological finds.

Activity as a forensic scientist and expert

In 1987 he autopsied together with the head of forensic medicine Werner Janssen on behalf of the Barschel family, the body of Uwe Barschel, who died on October 11, 1987 . Among other things, he was an expert in the Kachelmann case and was involved in the investigation into the Göhrde murders . In 2015, Püschel examined the body of Reemtsma kidnapper Wolfgang Koszics, who died under mysterious circumstances in Portugal.

Püschel also worked abroad. He was active in Kosovo, Egypt and Syria. In Benin he autopsied the victim of a " voodoo murder". In Rwanda , he helped set up a memorial for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda at the Murambi Genocide Memorial .

Since the mid-2000s, Püschel has been doing anthropological and forensic examinations of various archaeological finds, such as the bog bodies of the woman from Peiting , the boy from Kayhausen , the child from the Esterweger can , the girl from the Uchter bog , the man from Bernuthsfeld or the breast skin of the girl from the Bareler Moor , but also of the so-called Hamburg Störtebeker's skull.

Health policy positions

Emetic use

At times, Püschel advocated the compulsory use of emetics to preserve evidence in alleged drug offenses. After the death of a number of suspects, including one in Hamburg, the European Court of Human Rights saw the compulsory emetics on July 11, 2006 as “inhuman and degrading treatment”, which violated the prohibition of torture in Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The campaign against the use of emetics by the Hamburg Refugee Council therefore filed criminal charges in October 2006 against the former interior senators Olaf Scholz , Ronald Schill and, among others, Püschel.

Age estimate of refugees

Püschel is in favor of the nationwide medical age assessment of underage, unaccompanied refugees without identity papers and carries this out at the clinic in Hamburg-Eppendorf. The German Medical Association rejects the involvement of doctors in determining the age of refugees who declare to be minors.

DNA storage

Püschel advocates storing the DNA codes of all people in Germany. Gene samples should be taken from every newborn and every adult, including tourists and refugees. "Then we can solve crimes much faster and much better," says Püschel. Germany would then be “an oasis in a criminal environment”.

Hamburg's data protection officer, Johannes Caspar , warned urgently that the storage represented “a massive millionfold encroachment on the fundamental right to informational self-determination and human dignity”, which was “neither compatible with the presumption of innocence nor with the principle of proportionality ”.

COVID-19 pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic , Püschel said on April 7, 2020 that fear of the virus was exaggerated. In Hamburg, not a single person who is not previously ill has died from the virus. The virus affects our lives in a completely exaggerated way. "That bears no relation to the danger posed by the virus". He is convinced that corona mortality will "not even make itself felt as a peak in annual mortality". He also saw no reason for fear of death in connection with the spread of the disease in the Hamburg region. On April 9, 2020, on the talk show Markus Lanz , he criticized the original RKI recommendation to avoid an internal investigation, autopsies or other aerosol-producing measures or, if necessary, to keep them to a minimum. He described this as a “completely wrong measure” and repeated that, according to his knowledge, “mainly sick people and people with a weakened immune system” have died. By May 27, he himself had autopsied over 200 deceased COVID-19 patients. In 204 people who died with COVID-19, the COVID-19 infection was found to be the cause of death in 195 cases in his institute.

On April 8, 2020, in an interview with n-tv , he praised the measures taken by German politicians to prevent the virus from spreading and the hospitals being overloaded: “I think the politicians have organized that well.” In May 2020, Püschel shared the NDR magazine Panorama that he is convinced that the politicians in Germany had made good decisions in good time to mitigate the medical consequences of Covid-19. In an interview with ZEIT-Magazin on May 28, 2020, he said about the federal government's measures to contain the pandemic: “I also supported that, I accept these political decisions. Dealing with the pandemic in Germany was clearly successful. "

Püschel advocates self-determined handling of risk. In his view, it is rational to simply “classify the pandemic among the many dangers and diseases that exist in the world and in life. Again and again I see people lying with me at the institute who have consciously accepted great risks for themselves. As a smoker, while eating, during sex. They should, as long as they don't endanger anyone else. Let's live our life as long as we have it. "

Working groups led by Klaus Püschel and Stefan Kluge succeeded in detecting multiple venous thromboses and fatal pulmonary embolisms in deceased COVID-19 patients through dissections . This revealed that not the virus-induced pneumonia and the resulting disturbance of the gas exchange , but the heart failure due to the extensive relocation of the pulmonary circulation by pulmonary emboli is responsible for a large proportion of deaths. The corona virus is said to activate the coagulation system in blood vessels by attaching it to the endothelium in many organs. A coordinated, possibly higher-dose thrombosis prophylaxis with low molecular weight heparin is therefore a critical addition to the therapeutic approach .
