Lycium tenuispinosum is a plant species from the genus of the buckthorn ( Lycium ) inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae).
description
Lycium tenuispinosum is an upright shrub that reaches heights of 0.4 to 2 m. The leaves are succulent or membranous and can have different hairs. The leaves are 1.5 to 15 mm long and 0.5 to 2 mm wide.
The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is tubular to bell-shaped. The calyx tube becomes 2 to 3 mm long and is covered with 2 to 5 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is funnel-shaped, white, light yellow or purple, the veins are dark purple. The corolla tube reaches a length of 4 to 8 mm, the corolla lobes are 2.5 to 4.5 mm long. The stamens are hairy on the lower 2 to 3 mm of the base.
The fruit is a yellow, orange, red, violet or dark purple colored, spherical berry that is 5 to 9 mm long and 4.5 to 6 mm wide. Ten to 20 seeds are formed per carpel .
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence
The species is widespread in South America and occurs there in Argentina and Chile .
Systematics
Molecular biological studies place the species together with Lycium brevipes , Lycium carolinianum and Lycium rachidocladum in a clearly supported clade , which in turn is placed in a larger clade of purely American species.
