Lydia Selina Dunn, Baroness Dunn , DBE , JP ( Chinese  鄧 蓮 如  /  邓 莲 如 , Pinyin Dèng Liánrú , Jyutping dang 6 lin 4 jyu 4 ; born February 29, 1940 in Hong Kong ) is a British politician , economic manager and life peer .

life and career

Dunn was born in Hong Kong in 1940 as the daughter of Yen Chuen Yih Dunn and Bessie Dunn. She attended St. Paul's Convent School in Hong Kong and the College of the Holy Names and the University of California .

She joined the Swire Group in 1964 and was Director of John Swire & Sons (Hong Kong) Ltd from 1978 to 2003 and Director of Swire Pacific Ltd. since 1981. Since 1996 she has been the director of John Swire & Sons Ltd. From 1985 to 1997 she was director of Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd , and from 1997 to 2002 she was an advisor to the board. In 1990 she became a Non-Executive Director and held this position until 2008. 1992 Dunn became Deputy Chairman ( Deputy Chairman ) of the HSBC group. She stayed that way until 2008. Dunn was also the Non-Executive Director of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited from 1981 to 1996. From 1996 to 1998 she was a director of Christie's International plc. , from 1998 to 2000 then for Christie's Fine Art Ltd. From 1997 to 2002 she was director of Marconi plc (previously GEC plc ). She was Vice President of Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation from 1992 to 1996, having previously served as Director from 1981 to 1996.

She has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Cunfucius Institute for Business London since 2006. She has been a member of the Christies Greater China Advisory Board since 2009.

From 1983 to 1991 she was Chair of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council . She was a member of the Hong Kong / Japan Business Co-operation Committee from 1983 to 1988, and then chairman from 1988 to 1995. Dunn was chairman of the Lord Wilson Heritage Trust from 1993 to 1995. From 1991 to 1993 she was director of Volvo AB , before that she was a member of the advisory board from 1985 to 1991. Dunn was also a member of the Hong Kong / US Economic Co-operation Committee from 1984 to 1993. Since 1993 she has been President of Hong Kong LEP Trust.

Dunn is married to Michael David Thomas , who was Hong Kong Attorney General from 1983 to 1988 .

Political career in Hong Kong

In 1976 she became a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council. She stayed there until 1985. Dunn was a member of the Executive Council from 1982 to 1988. She was Senior Unofficial Member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council and Executive Council from 1985 to 1988 and 1988 to 1995, succeeding Rogerio Hyndman Lobo and Chung Sze Yuen . As a senior politician, Dunn had significant influence in the Hong Kong government before she retired in 1992, after Chris Patten became governor .

Membership in the House of Lords

She was appointed Life Peer as Baroness Dunn , of Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong and of Knightsbridge in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on August 24, 1990 . In the House of Lords she was a crossbencher. She gave her inaugural address on November 13, 1990. She was last present on March 14, 2007 for a vote. She last spoke up on June 27, 2007. She resigned from the House of Lords on June 30, 2010 to avoid UK property taxation .

Honors

In 1976 Dunn became a Justice of the Peace . In 1978 she received the Order of the British Empire . In 1987 she received the Prime Minister of Japan's Trade Award. She received the US Secretary of Commerce's Peace and Commerce Award in 1988. In 1983 she became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and in 1989 Dame Commander .

Dunn has received several honorary doctorates. In 1984 she received an honorary doctorate in law from the Chinese University of Hong Kong . She was honored with the same title in 1991 by the University of Hong Kong , in recognition of her commitment to society and trade , and in the same year by the University of British Columbia and in 1994 by the University of Leeds . The University of Buckingham honored her in 1995 with an honorary doctorate as a Doctor of Science . Dunn is an Honorary Fellow of the London Business School .
