The spiky meander truffle , white or German truffle ( Choiromyces maeandriformis or C. venosus ) is a species of fungus from the genus of the meander truffle (Choiromyces).

features

The spiky meander truffle forms irregularly spherical-tuberous fruit bodies with an uneven, bumpy-wrinkled surface that can be 4–12 centimeters wide and externally resemble a potato tuber. The color of the fruiting bodies is initially gray-white and changes to clay-colored to ocher-gray in older mushrooms. The firm, pithy fruit mass is whitish and criss-crossed by narrow, ribbon-like, branched strands that led to the name . The smell of the spiky meander truffle is peculiarly aromatic (like cooked corn), garlic-like and disgusting with age. The fruit bodies are initially growing underground, the apex of ripe fruit bodies looks out of the earth. The spores of the species are spherical with a diameter of 15 to 20 micrometers, the 3–5 micrometer long spines on the spores are characteristic.

ecology

The spiky meander truffle is a mycorrhizal fungus that grows on basic loamy soils in deciduous and coniferous forests that are favored by warmth, especially under European beeches . The fruiting bodies appear in Central Europe from July to October. It occurs in Germany from the foothills of the Alps to the low mountain ranges, but is absent in the northern German lowlands.

meaning

The spiky meander truffle is edible, but raw, like many mushrooms, is poisonous. Because of its rarity (category 2 in the 1992 Red List) it should be spared. The species was voted mushroom of the year by the German Society for Mycology in 2001 in order to draw attention to the large number of mushrooms that grow underground.
