The Mönchsberg is a mountain in the area of Jena , south of Winzerla and northwest of Göschwitz . It can be reached from both districts via hiking trails. From here you have the opportunity to take hiking trails to the Leutratal or Ammerbacher Platte , both well-known destinations for hikes in Jena's surroundings. According to the Thuringian State Institute for Environment and Geology, its height is 399 m.

From this mountain there are rewarding views of the southern Jena districts of Göschwitz, Lobeda and Maua .

From 1886 to 1967 limestone was mined on the Mönchsberg , which was transported to the Jena-Göschwitz cement works for cement production via a cable car on the eastern slope of the mountain. With the closure of the cement works, the quarrying of the limestone was stopped. After that, the area served as a shooting range for the Society for Sport and Technology (GST). In the 1990s, the site was briefly used as a "car cemetery".

Essentially, the mountain consists of an approximately 500 × 400 m large plateau , which is limited in the south by the slope towards Göschwitz and in the north by the approximately 30 meter high wall of the former quarry .

A steppe-like vegetation is characteristic: Small trees grow on an area covered with scree and smaller stones, mostly with low grass. Several years ago, students from the Jena Waldorf School from the Göschwitz district below the Mönchsberg formed interesting figures, labyrinths and lettering out of stones.
