List of mills in Munich
This article lists lost and still preserved mills in Munich . Almost all of the mill buildings that have survived are no longer used as mills, only the Hofbräuhaus art mill still serves as a grain mill .
history
Since the Middle Ages , the Munich city streams , which flowed on the lowest of the Munich gravel terraces to the left and right of the Isar , have been used as an energy source for mills. On the left of the Isar, this area corresponds predominantly to the districts of Isarvorstadt , Lehel and the part of the old town between Marienplatz and Isartor (the former valley town). To the right of the Isar, this corresponds to the parts of Untergiesing and the Au , located below the Isar high bank , through which the Auer Mühlbach flows.
The first documented mill in today's Munich city area is the Giesinger grain mill (Schrafnagelmühle), which was mentioned in a document in 957 and which later became the baker's art mill .
The mills weren't just grain mills for grinding grain into flour. The water power of the streams was also used for stamping, hammering, sawing and grinding, for example. In the 19th century, the drive of the mills was mainly switched from water power to electricity . However, some water turbines continued to run and generated electricity.
After the closure of the Kraemer'schen Kunstmühle in 2007, the Hofbräuhaus-Kunstmühle is the last mill that is still in operation in the Munich city area.
