The Mühlenweg is a residential area of the local community Rheinbreitbach in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Neuwied . Located at the level of the town center, it represents the Rhine front and promenade of Rheinbreitbach.

geography

The Mühlenweg residential area only includes the part of the Mühlenweg located west of the federal highway 42 and the railway line on the right bank of the Rhine on the banks of the Rhine. It includes about five residential buildings, which are spread over the towpath and the Heerstraße that runs above and parallel to it . The terrain drops steeply at the edge of the terrace behind the towpath towards the Rhine promenade. To the northeast of the residential area, there are two excavated ponds east and west of the railway line in the so-called maar . Along with the Rolandsmühle residential area to the north, Mühlenweg is the only permanently inhabited area of Rheinbreitbach on the Rhine.

history

In the area of the Mühlenweg there was a loading point on the banks of the Rhine for the copper ores extracted in two quarries above Rheinbreitbach from the middle to the end of the 19th century . In 1885 the Mühlenweg residential area on the Rhine had 18 residents in two residential buildings.

In 1887 a cable car was built from Asberg on a route of 6.3 km to the banks of the Rhine on Mühlenweg, which was used to transport the basalt that was broken there . To the south of the Mühlenweg, buildings and systems were built for the recycling and further shipping of the basalt, which were connected to one another by rails. Part of the basalt was crushed by hand. This place was named St. Marienbergerplatz after a former quarry . There was also a forge on Mühlenweg for repair purposes . In 1902 the cable car was shut down. A basalt retaining wall is evidence of the facilities on Mühlenweg.

On the banks of the Rhine, there was a landing stage for shipping on the Rhine and a ferry connection to Oberwinter , which was operated with the Isolde ferry from 1936 and was discontinued in 1969. In 1963, a campsite with outside catering was set up in the corridor Auf dem Salmenfang north of the Mühlenweg . In the same period of time, poplar trees were grown there over a length of around 500 m , which characterize the entire Rheinbreitbacher Rheinufer. Another beer garden located above the Leinpfad goes back to the former inn "Zum Rheinblick", which was first mentioned around 1900 . The Rhine shipping pier has not been used since the late 1990s and has been dismantled. In the course of canal and ostrich construction work in 2003/04, copper slag from the time of mining operations was found on Mühlenweg .
