The Rugenberger Damm waste recovery plant (MVR) is a waste incineration plant in Hamburg-Altenwerder . It is operated by MVR Müllverwertung Rugenberger Damm GmbH & Co. KG, in which Vattenfall Europe New Energy held a 55 percent share until February 2020 and Stadtreinigung Hamburg through SRH Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH with 45 percent. In February 2020, Stadtreinigung Hamburg took over the shares from Vattenfall. About two thirds of the facility is used for waste disposal for Hamburg and one third for the four Lower Saxony districts of Rotenburg (Wümme) , Harburg , Heidekreis and Stade .
The plant, which is dimensioned for an annual throughput of 320,000 t, was put into operation in 1999. The energy released when the waste is burned is used to generate electricity , process steam for industrial customers and district heating . The latter has been decoupled in the form of hot water (heating water) for an E.ON Hanse supply area in Hamburg-Neuwiedenthal and Hamburg-Neugraben-Fischbek since autumn 2004 .
The crude acid produced during flue gas cleaning is concentrated to a technically pure 30% hydrochloric acid, which is sold in the chemical industry, the construction industry and power plants. REA gypsum is supplied to the construction industry for the production of plaster of paris.
