history

The M1 mortar was based on the French Army's Brandt Mle 27/31 mortar , which was designed by Edgar Brandt , a French weapons engineer. At the same time as the M1, the 60 mm M2 mortar was developed to provide a lightweight alternative to fire support at company level . The M1 and M2 mortars were used by the US Army during World War II and into the 1950s.

The successor to the M1, the M29 , was introduced into the US Army in 1952 and replaced the M1 primarily because it was lighter and its range was greater.
