The M2

The M2 (Armenian: Մ 2) is a main street in Armenia . It leads from the center to the southeast of the country, from the capital Yerevan to Agarak on the border with Iran . The M2 is the only transit route for cargo from Iran to Yerevan.

Between Goris and Kapan , the M2 formed roughly the border with the Azerbaijani Soviet Republic in Soviet times and ran on a section across the border. Since 1994 the border to the de facto existing Nagorno-Karabakh Republic has been a little further east. The alternative route in this area on the H45 (Armenian: Հ 45) via Tandsawer is hardly used.

history

The 37 km section of the Yerevan to Ararat motorway near the Turkish border was built during the Soviet era. It was of strategic importance for the Soviet army because of its proximity to the border with NATO member Turkey . This section has two lanes with four lanes.
