description

M38 with the turret of an M24 Chaffee

The M38 Wolfhound had a crew of four and was armed with a 37 mm cannon as main armament, which was located in an open-top rotating turret. A total of 93 grenades were carried. The armored car had two machine guns as secondary armament. A Browning M1919A4-MG was mounted coaxially with the 37 mm cannon and a 12.7 mm M2 MG was mounted on the turret for anti-aircraft defense. The engine came from Cadillac, had eight cylinders and was water-cooled. The drive formula was 6 × 6 and the distance between the three axes was the same. The front armor plate was inclined to provide better protection from fire. The vehicle was also equipped with radio equipment. As an experiment, an M38 was equipped with the tower of an M24 Chaffee . The design of the M38 was trend-setting for armored vehicles of the post-war period like the British reconnaissance vehicle Alvis Saladin .

In total, only a few M38 prototypes were produced.
