MIPS Technologies Inc. (formerly MIPS Computer Systems ) was an American IT company. MIPS was the first commercial provider of RISC - processors and the developer of the MIPS architecture . In addition, were processor architectures and synthesizable processor cores as well as tools available to software development. According to its own information, the company was the world's second largest manufacturer of IP cores .

history

MIPS Computer Systems was founded in 1984 by John L. Hennessy , John Moussouris and Edward P. Stritter (among others chief architect of the 68000 main processor of Motorola ) in Mountain View , California . In November 1989 the company was floated on the stock exchange ( Nasdaq ) with Bob Miller as CEO . In 1992 it was completely taken over by Silicon Graphics (SGI) for 333 million dollars and integrated as the MIPS Group . MIPS Computer Systems no longer existed.

1998 chose SGI for the Itanium architecture from Intel to use. The MIPS Group went public again under the name MIPS Technologies Inc. as an independent company that offers licenses for the use of intellectual property . The company's second IPO took place on June 30, 1998. SGI initially retained part of the shares and then sold them two years later.

In 2002 the British company Algorithmics Ltd , in 2005 the US company First Silicon Solutions and in 2007 the Portuguese company Chipidea were taken over.

In December 2012 it was announced that version 4.0 of Google's Android operating system had been successfully ported to the MIPS architecture.

In February 2013 MIPS Technologies was taken over by the British company Imagination Technologies , best known for its PowerVR technology. As part of the sale of Imagination Technologies to Canyon Bridge Capital Partners in 2017, MIPS Technologies was initially transferred to Tallwood Venture Capital and taken over by Wave Computing in June 2018 .
