history

The company was founded in 1969 by John MacDonald and Werner (Vern) Dettwiler in British Columbia. It began with the development of complex electronic components that were developed and produced according to customer requirements. Another company task was data processing and in particular information processing for various space agencies, both in the civil and military sectors. Over the years the company has developed a broad spectrum for information processing as well as for electronic, operational systems. In July 2000 the company went public. In 2008 the Canadian government blocked the sale of the company to the US space company Alliant Techsystems (ATK). In June 2012 MDA announced the takeover of the US space company Space Systems / Loral . The transaction is valued at approximately $ 875 million and is expected to be completed by fall 2012. The takeover makes MDA one of the largest satellite manufacturers. On November 2, 2012, the US regulatory authority gave its approval for the takeover.
