Maciej Garbowski

Maciej Garbowski (born February 2, 1981 in Katowice ) is a Polish classical and jazz musician ( double bass , composition ).

Live and act

Garbowski began to learn the double bass when he was ten. He studied at the Jazz Institute until 2004 and at the Classical Faculty of the Katowice Music Academy until 2005 . Between 2002 and 2005 he was a member of the Aukso Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Marek Moś.

In 2001 he founded the trio RGG with the pianist Przemysław Raminiak and the drummer Krzysztof Gradziuk , which released several albums; Łukasz Ojdana has been the pianist since 2013 . Now the trio has earned a reputation as a representative of contemporary acoustic jazz in Poland; there were also albums with musicians such as Evan Parker , Verneri Pohjola , Samuel Blaser and Trevor Watts . Garbowski is also the initiator and composer of the Lutosławski Collective project . Tomasz Stańko brought him into his New Balladyna Quartet ; he also belonged to the quartet of the singer Anna Gadt . He was also part of Maciej Obara's trio and quartet ; he also recorded with Daniel Popiałkiewicz and Piotr Damasiewicz. He also worked with Anders Jormin , Lena Willemark , Kristina Fuchs and Jon Fält .

Since 2007 he has been teaching bass at the Jazz Institute of the Katowice Music Academy.

Prizes and awards

Garbowski received first prize at the Jazz Blizzard Festival 2003 and 2007 , second prize and audience award at the Getxo Jazz Festival 2003. With RGG he received the Grand Prix Jazz Melomani 2008 for the best jazz album ( Unfinished Story ). His solo debut album Elements was nominated for the Fryderyk Music Prize in 2013. He is the third place winner at the Krzysztof Komeda International Composition Competition 2003 for the composition In Him We Trust .
