Anna GADT (* 12. May 1981 as Anna Stępniewska ) is a Polish jazz musician ( vocals ) and vocal coach.

Live and act

Gadt began taking classical piano lessons at the state music school in Kutno at the age of nine ; she graduated with honors from the piano class and first studied classical music. Impressed by a solo by Toots Thielemans on Pat Metheny's Secret Story , she switched to jazz. In 2002 she was accepted into the Jazz Institute of the Katowice Music Academy . In 2013 she did her doctorate in the discipline of jazz singing on the subject of "Literary meaning of text and practical application in jazz music."

In 2001 she met Szymon Makohin and Michał Jabłoński, with whom she founded the neo-soul band Fizz the Fire two years later . In 2004 she performed with this formation at the Smart Jazz Festival in Warsaw, and in the following year they played in the local congress hall as opening act for the British band Brand New Heavies . Performances in Germany and at the Saulkrasti Jazz Festival in Latvia followed.

In August 2008 she released her debut album Na mojej drodze , which was nominated for the Fryderyk in the category “Newcomer of the Year in Jazz” . She then adopted her mother's name as a stage name. Her second album Still I Rise was released in 2010 under the name Anna Gadt ; She was supported by Rafał Stępień, Maciej Garbowski and Krzysztof Gradziuk. On her third album Breathing she worked with the RGG Trio (next to Garbowski, Gradziuk the pianist Łukasz Ojdana ). In 2015 Gadt appeared as Ella in the opera The Magic Mountain composed by Paweł Mykietyn . In 2017 she released her fourth studio album, Renaissance ; In a trio with the accordionist Zbyszek Chojnacki and again Krzysztof Gradziuk she explored liturgical chants of the Renaissance (for example by Mikołaj Radomski , Wacław Szamotulski and Joannis de Lublin ) using contemporary improvisation. On her fifth album Mysterium lunae (2018) she worked again with the RGG Trio (and the cellist Annemie Osborne). She was nominated for the Fryderik as "Artist of the Year". She can also be heard on albums by Kazik Staszewski , Grupa Skiflowa Zacier , Lora Szafran and Aleksandra Kutrzepa.

Gadt teaches as a lecturer at the Jazz Institute of the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice. In 2009 she became the conductor of the Jazz City Choir , on whose album of the same name from 2012 she can also be heard as a soloist.

Prizes and awards

Gadt has won numerous prizes both as a student and after graduation: She received the main prize at the International Jazz Vocalist Meetings (2001) and the XXXII Old Jazz Meeting (2002). In 2006 she received the main prize at the international jazz singing competition at the Jazz Stuggle Festival . In 2007 she received an award at the Jazz nad Odrą Festival in Wroclaw and in 2011 at the Agnieszka Osiecka Music Studio of the Polish Radio. In 2017 she came in second place as singer of the year 2017 in the magazine Jazz Forum .
