Laura Mackenzie Phillips (born November 10, 1959 in Alexandria , Virginia ) is an American actress .

Life and accomplishments

Her middle name was the inspiration for the stage name of the musician Phillip Wallach Blondheim , who later became known as Scott McKenzie . Her father John Phillips , who was playing with him in a band at the time, suggested this name to him when he was looking for a suitable stage name.

Mackenzie Phillips made her debut opposite William Shatner in the 1973 television drama Go Ask Alice. In the same year the film American Graffiti was released, in which she played one of the bigger roles. She took on the same role in the sequel, The Party is over ... The 1979 sequel to American Graffiti .

From 1975 to 1983 Phillips appeared in 123 episodes of the television series One Day at a Time . For this role she was nominated for the TV Land Award in 2005. In the film drama Love Behind Bars (1982) she played one of the bigger roles alongside Amy Madigan and Beau Bridges . She struggled with substance abuse problems in the 1980s, which she did not tackle until after rehab in 1992. In her 2009 book High on Arrival , Mackenzie Phillips reported on this excessive drug experience and her incest relationship with her father John.

From 1999 to 2001, Phillips played the famous mother of Fiona Phillips ( Cara DeLizia ) in the television series Fiona's Website . In the SF thriller The Jacket (2005) she played a nurse alongside Adrien Brody , Keira Knightley and Jennifer Jason Leigh .

Phillips participated in the 3rd season of the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew participated and was escorted during a drug rehab.

Phillips married three times, most recently in 2005 with the composer Keith Levenson. She has a child from the second of these marriages.
